Dog First Aid Kit

The infographics below show some good items to have on hand for your pet in case of emergencies. A DIY kit insures that you will have everything you might need. I have also posted some very good ready-made kits on the market, as well. They come in very basic packs starting around $20 on up to fully stocked packs costing as much as $90. Available online at many sites, your local pet supply stores, and even your local Humane Society. You could even add the extra items listed below if they are not included in the prepackaged kits.

This kit is available throughout the ASPCA Online Store http://www.aspcaonlinestore.com/product/36422

Pet Safety at the Beach

Anu has been to the beach about 3 times. The first 2 times she was really nervous. The last time she was ready to explore. We use her harness and leash. It is safer for puppy when using a proper restraint. We have jellyfish that wash up; this particular day, there was construction equipment, and other dogs, as well as a strong undertow in cold-ish water. We brought her a portable water bottle and dish and poop bags. It is easy for a 19 pound exploring and active puppy to get dehydrated and they always want to poop when you least expect them to. 😉

She had fun. And was excited to play on the edge of the foam with her family’s day out at the beach.

Pet Safety in the Car

I have been away from blogging for the past few days. I really missed being here on WordPress. Glad I am back.

Today I am featuring more about the safety of our pets. How do we keep them safe in the car?

Dogs look so adorable with their ears flapping out the car window. We feel a camaraderie with our pet as they ride with us, even sitting on our laps while we drive. This can be dangerous, not only for ourselves, but for our dog, as well. Some dogs climb all over the vehicle and us, it is a distraction from safe, defensive driving. If we were to get in an accident, our pet could be injured or killed as they fly around the vehicle. I have always been adamant about buckling up, the rule in my vehicle is to wear your seatbelt. The same should be true for our four legged family members.

Here is Anu in her booster seat. She was nervous the first couple of times. Then she started to realize it is fun when we take her out, so she does not really mind now.

Chocolate and Dogs Do Not Mix

Image

Chocolate is poisonous to dogs. Have you ever wondered why?

The following link from webmd explains:

http://pets.webmd.com/dogs/guide/dogs-and-chocolate-get-the-facts

The breakdown below shows us that cocoa (chocolate) contains theobromine and caffeine which are hazardous to your dog’s (pet’s) health and can kill them. Some dog treat manufacturers use carob, a healthier substitute for animals.

Also, beware of cocoa shell mulch in your own yard or other yards you pet may venture into. It is toxic to animals. Cocoa mulch is made from the cacao shells which contain theobromine.

Basic Emergency First Aid for Pets

April is National Pet First Aid Awareness Month. We all hope for the healthiest and safest of situations for our pets. Unfortunately, there may be a time when we might have to administer first aid for our pets. This is a really handy chart if we are faced with an emergency. The chart is to guide us in life saving techniques until we can get professional assistance; it is not intended as a replacement for professional care. Your local Red Cross chapter may offer classes for CPR & First Aid for pets, as well.
